Leading up to the City's 175th Birthday Party on April 21st

We want to share some of the history of Guntersville, below is in reference to how the City was founded and got it's name:

Guntersville (previously known as Gunter's Ferry and later Gunter's Landing) was founded by John Gunter (1765–1835). Gunter's great-great-grandfather (who was of Welsh-English descent) had emigrated to the New World in 1644. John Gunter himself was the wealthy owner of a salt mine in the early 19th century. In order to obtain more land to mine, he struck a deal with the Cherokee tribe that inhabited the area and as a part of the deal Gunter married the daughter (Ghe-No-He-Li, aka Katy and Cathrine) of the tribe's chief (Chief Bushyhead of the Paint Clan) and agreed to continue to provide salt to the tribe. A town sprung up next to the mine and was named after Gunter. The year after John Gunter died (1835) Louis Wyeth, a young lawyer from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, came to Guntersville. Wyeth was responsible for developing the town and establishing the county seat at Gunters Landing. Through Wyeth’s efforts, Guntersville was incorporated in 1848 by the Alabama State Legislature. After a series of contentious and sometimes confusing elections between 1838 and 1847 trying to determine the location of the county seat (which had originally been in Warrenton since 1841), Gunter's Landing won the election and the seat was moved.

Party on the Moon takes the stage at 7:00pm.
