Jackson County had 224 students ready for college in the 2023-24 school year, according to the Alabama Department of Education. This represents 86.2% of the 260 pupils in that year’s graduating cohort.

College readiness in the county increased compared to the previous school year, when 171 students were considered prepared for college.

Across Jackson County, Scottsboro High School stood out, with almost 87% of students set to graduate considered ready for college. Meanwhile, Section High School ranked last, with only 83.8% meeting the benchmark.

College readiness in the district varied based on students’ ethnicity. 56.9% of white students were considered ready for college in the 2023-24 school year. These rankings may not reflect absolute accuracy, as data for small student groups may have been suppressed to protect student privacy.

Jackson County had an overall graduation rate of 68.8%.

Alabama’s educational system was rated as one of the worst in the U.S., according to a 2023 study from Scholaroo. The state was ranked 46th based on factors such as school quality, student success, and teacher-to-student ratio.
