U.S. Census Bureau estimates show that older adults in the nation continue to increase in number while younger populations decline. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans age 65 and up grew by 13%, while the under-18 population dropped by 1.7%. The older adult population in the U.S. has expanded significantly over the last 100 years, from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.
Research from 2021 indicates nearly half of Americans in this age category—about 28 million people—could require long-term care and services. The same study projects that more than one-third may eventually need nursing home support.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
